Carnations Deserve Better Than Their Reputation

Carnations have an image problem. Somewhere along the line they got typecast as the flower you grab at the supermarket checkout when you've forgotten an anniversary, and the label has stuck harder than it should. Spend any real time working with them, though, and the reputation starts to look unfair.

Here's what we tell customers who wrinkle their nose at them: carnations will outlast almost everything else you put in a vase. A rose gives you maybe a week if you're lucky. Carnations routinely go two to three weeks, and I've had them hold on past the three-week mark when the water gets changed regularly. In a mixed arrangement they're often the last ones standing, still ruffled and bright after the lilies have called it quits.

The colour thing runs deeper than you'd expect

Part of what makes carnations so useful is range. They come in nearly every colour, including a few that don't occur naturally and get their shade from dyed water, which is how you end up with those electric blues and greens floating around every March.

The traditional meanings are worth knowing if you're sending them with intent. Red says deep affection. Pink is tied to a mother's love, and that's no accident: when Anna Jarvis campaigned to make Mother's Day a holiday over a century ago, she handed out white carnations because they'd been her own mother's favourite. The convention that grew out of that, pink or red for a mother who's living and white in memory of one who's passed, is still around, and it's a big part of why carnations move by the truckload every May.

A couple of the old meanings are less flattering. Yellow carnations historically signalled disappointment, and striped ones were a polite way of turning someone down. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, since almost nobody reads flowers that literally anymore, but it's the kind of trivia that makes a card note land better.

Getting three weeks out of them

Carnations aren't fussy, but a few habits stretch their life considerably:

• Cut the stems at an angle before they go in water, taking off a centimetre or two. A slanted cut gives them more surface to drink through.
• Strip any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Left on, they rot and turn the water murky within a day or two.
• Keep the vase out of direct sun and away from the fruit bowl. Carnations are sensitive to the ethylene gas that ripening fruit gives off, and it ages them fast.
• Change the water every few days and give the stems a quick re-trim while you're at it. That single step does most of the work.

Beyond that they don't ask for much. A packet of flower food helps, but clean water changed often gets you most of the way there.

When a carnation is the right call

I'll push back gently on the idea that carnations are only ever a budget stand-in. They earn their spot for practical reasons. If you're sending flowers somewhere they won't get fussed over, say an office reception desk or a busy hospital ward, longevity matters more than a showy bloom that's spent by Thursday. Sympathy work leans on them heavily for the same reason, helped along by their softer, old-fashioned look.

They mix beautifully too. A florist reaches for carnations to add body and texture without stealing focus from the feature flowers, and those ruffled heads fill space that would otherwise take three times the stem count in roses. On their own, a tight dome in a single colour looks far more deliberate than most people expect.
